What Running Our Own Perfume Vending Machines Has Taught Us

Spray Station runs around 40 of its own perfume vending machines. Here is what that shows about venues, fragrances and upkeep, and why it matters when you buy.

Spray Station does not only sell perfume vending machines. We run around 40 of our own across the UK and Ibiza, in venues including Studio 338 and Amnesia Ibiza. The clearest thing that experience has taught us is that a perfume vending machine works when it is in the right venue, in the right spot, with the right fragrances. This is what we have learned, and why it is useful to you when you buy one.

Why does it matter that we operate machines ourselves?

Plenty of companies will sell you a machine. Fewer can tell you what happens after it goes on the wall. Because we refill, monitor and look after our own machines every week, the advice we give buyers comes from doing the job, not from a brochure.

It also shapes the product. The Spray Box is the machine you will find on our own venue walls: five refillable 100 ml fragrances, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, contactless payments and a dashboard you can check from your phone. We sell the kind of machine we are happy to run ourselves.

Lesson 1: the venue matters more than the machine

A brilliant machine in a quiet venue will still be quiet. In our own venues, three things make the biggest difference:

  • Footfall. The more suitable customers who pass the machine, the more chances it has to be used.
  • The crowd. People who care about how they look and smell on a night out are natural customers.
  • Busy nights. A venue that is packed several nights a week gives a machine far more opportunity than one with a single busy evening.

That is why nightlife has been such a strong fit for us. Long evenings, late opening and customers who want to freshen up between the dance floor and the bar suit perfume vending perfectly.

Lesson 2: where it goes inside the venue counts

Two identical machines in the same building can perform very differently. One that customers walk straight past will be used far more than one tucked around a corner.

Washrooms are the natural home for a wall-mounted machine. People are already checking the mirror, they have a moment to spare, and a quick spray feels like part of the routine. In larger venues we often look at one machine for each suitable washroom area rather than a single machine for the whole building.

Good placement is simple: visible, easy to reach, close to power and out of the way of queues.

Lesson 3: fragrance choice drives use

The five fragrances you load are your shop window. Recognisable scents that suit the venue’s crowd get chosen again and again. A poorly matched range sits there.

Because every machine holds five refillable bottles, you are free to change the line-up whenever you like. The dashboard shows which fragrances are selling, so the decision is easy: keep the favourites, swap out the slow ones and try something new. We do exactly this in our own venues.

Lesson 4: small, regular checks keep it performing

Perfume vending is a low-intervention business, but it is not a no-intervention one. The good news is that most of the upkeep can be done without leaving home:

  • Stock levels are visible remotely, so you know when a refill is due before a fragrance runs out.
  • Test sprays can be run from the dashboard. We do this weekly on our own machines to make sure every line is spraying properly.
  • Settings and screen content can be changed remotely, and the machine can be restarted from your phone if it ever needs it.

That leaves visits for what actually needs a person: refilling bottles and keeping the machine looking its best. With around 3,500 to 4,000 sprays in a full set of bottles, those visits are not frequent.

Lesson 5: let the data guide you

Every sale shows up in the dashboard, by day and by fragrance. That takes the guesswork out of running a machine. You can see which nights are strongest, which scents people prefer and how one venue compares with another.

One piece of advice from our own experience: judge a venue on a fair run of normal trading, not on one unusually good or quiet night.

What this means when you buy from us

When you buy a perfume vending machine from Spray Station, you are buying from people who run them. In practice that means:

  • Honest advice before you order on which model suits your space, where to position it and which fragrances to start with.
  • Onboarding and tutorial videos covering setup, refilling and the dashboard.
  • Ongoing support from a team that deals with the same day-to-day questions in its own venues.
  • Your own brand on the machine. It is not a franchise. You choose the colours, add your logo and run it under your own name.
  • A 12-month warranty and help with spare parts.

We have sold hundreds of machines to customers in more than nine countries, and every one of those buyers has had the same operating experience behind them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spray Station run its own perfume vending machines?

Yes. As well as supplying machines to buyers around the world, Spray Station operates around 40 of its own perfume vending machines across the UK and Ibiza, in venues including Studio 338 and Amnesia Ibiza.

What kind of venue suits a perfume vending machine best?

In our experience, busy nightlife and late-night venues are the strongest: high footfall, long evenings and customers who want to freshen up. Bars, hotels, gyms and event spaces can also work well when footfall is steady and the machine is easy to reach.

How much attention does a machine need once it is installed?

Very little day to day. Sales, stock levels and test sprays are handled remotely from a phone or computer, so visits are mainly for refilling the five fragrance bottles and giving the machine a wipe.

Do I get help choosing the right machine and location?

Yes. Tell us about your venue or the venues you are approaching and we will recommend a model, a position and a starting fragrance range, then support you through setup and beyond.
