Perfume Vending

How Do Perfume Vending Machines Work?

How a perfume vending machine works, step by step: choosing a fragrance, contactless payment, the spray, refilling, remote management and where machines are installed.

A perfume vending machine is a self-service machine that sells individual sprays of fragrance. Instead of buying a full bottle, customers pay a small amount for one or more sprays of a recognisable scent — exactly when they want it. Here is how the process works, using Spray Station machines as the example.

The customer experience, step by step

  1. Choose a fragrance. The customer selects one of five fragrances, and the number of sprays, on a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Between sales, the same screen shows the owner’s branding, adverts or video.
  2. Pay contactlessly. They tap a card, phone or smartwatch on the Nayax payment reader. Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted.
  3. Press the button. Each fragrance has its own illuminated button on the front of the machine.
  4. Enjoy the spray. The customer holds their wrist or neck to the nozzle and receives a clean, measured spray.

The whole interaction takes seconds and needs no staff — which is why perfume vending works so well in busy venues.

What is inside the machine

A Spray Station perfume vending machine holds five fragrances in 100 ml bottles. Each bottle gives roughly 700–800 sprays, so a full set delivers around 3,500–4,000 sprays before refilling, depending on the fragrances and spray dosage.

Customers never handle a bottle or open tester: the fragrance stays inside the machine and is dispensed through the nozzle.

How payments and money work

Payments are processed by the built-in Nayax card reader and paid to the owner’s bank account. Machines connect over Wi-Fi or 4G, which keeps payments and monitoring running without a wired connection.

How owners manage machines remotely

Each machine connects to an app and web dashboard where owners can:

  • See every transaction and track sales over time
  • Monitor stock levels so fragrances are refilled before they run out
  • Run test sprays remotely
  • Update the touchscreen’s adverts, images and video

This is what makes it practical to run several machines across different venues.

Wall-mounted or freestanding

The same five-fragrance spray unit comes in three formats: the wall-mounted Spray Box, the freestanding Spray Stand with a 43-inch advertising screen, and the Spray Pedestal on a display base. See our comparison of perfume vending machines.

Where perfume vending machines work best

The best locations combine strong footfall, time spent on site and a moment when people want to freshen up: nightclub and bar washrooms, hotels, gyms, shopping centres, restaurants and events. Spray Station machines have been hosted by venues including Amnesia Ibiza, Studio 338 and Heaven London.
